Hypnotherapy and stage hypnosis are related, in that they both use hypnosis, but the way it is used is not the same. It's like two musicians using the same instrument, but one plays classical, the other plays pop - the instrument stays the same but it can be used in many different ways.
A hypnotherapist is trained only in the therapeutic uses of hypnosis and psychotherapy and does not intend to use hypnosis for entertainment.
A stage hypnotist is trained differently, and learns how to select the audience members who would be able to reach a very deep level of hypnosis (the "Delta" state) quickly. The selection process starts before the show even commences, because the audience will be made up of a higher percentage of people who want to "perform" in the first place. In hypnosis, you have a heightened imagination and are less self-conscious, which are ideal if you want to use it for performing.
So the instrument (hypnosis) is the same, but the training, intentions and application are different.
You can rest assured that a hypnotherapist uses hypnosis for therapy, not for entertainment.
