It’s all to do with what happens to our bodies when we are afraid or stressed, when we enter a physical state which is commonly known as “Fight, Flight or Freeze” and our muscles tense up to prepare to fight, run away, or hide from the danger.
At the turn of the last century, an English doctor, Grantly Dick-Read, realised that the expectation of pain and fear of birth so prevalent in our Western culture was to blame for putting women’s bodies into this stressed state. He also found that when the muscles of the uterus are tense, they work against each other, which slows down labour and causes unnecessary pain.
He named this the Fear – Tension – Pain syndrome of childbirth and recommended that women should be kept physically and emotionally calm and relaxed during birth for it to progress smoothly as Nature intended.
With North Wales Hypnobirthing, this calm, controlled comfort can be yours
Hypnobirthing is a complete antenatal course for couples, helping you to have the most natural childbirth possible. You will learn techniques that are not covered in other antenatal classes, such as:
Breathing and deep relaxation techniques that work with the body and actually help the birth
How to reduce the need for any medication at all
How to reduce the likelihood of induction or “speeding up” of labour
How to reduce your risk of episiotomy
How to prepare a comprehensive birth plan
How to release any fears you may have about childbirth
How to deeply relax and stay calm and in control, regardless of your surroundings
These techniques have been shown to have additional benefits (click here for impressive statistics gathered by the NHS hospital that I introduced to Hypnobirthing back in 2005, and whose midwives now run Hypnobirthing classes!), such as:
Considerably shorter labour and birthing
Significantly fewer surgical births
Higher number of natural births
A high success rate in helping breech babies to turn
Mums have more energy and less post natal depression, or “baby blues”
Better bonding between parents and baby (and each other)
Calmer babies who tend to sleep and feed better
Dads are much more involved
