Anything that encourages you to focus, which causes a natural alteration in brainwave patterns, can be called “hypnotic”.
You can hypnotise yourself, either accidentally or deliberately, when you gaze into the flames of a fire; when you listen to certain types of music; when you close your eyes and focus on slowing down your breathing. As you know, when this happens naturally, you come out of the “trance” state easily, either by just drifting back up in your own time, or when something or someone distracts you back to full awareness. This also happens every 90 minutes or so, when your brain switches naturally to absorb information (the Ultradian Rhythm).
HYPNOTHERAPIST-GUIDED HYPNOSIS
It’s much easier to enter a deliberate state of relaxed focus (hypnosis) when you have someone to guide you and keep you focussed. This is what a hypnotist, or hypnotherapist does – usually with relaxing background music and verbal ideas and images to follow in your mind. A hypnotherapist can also help you to “deepen” the state from Beta, to Alpha, then Theta (sometimes even Delta); making the positive ideas presented to you much more effective.
